Patient Spotlight
Manuel
46-year-old Manuel says he owes his life to the Clackamas Free Clinic. The husband/father of four has had on-and-off access to health insurance over the years.
I would be dead if it weren’t for the clinic. I didn’t pay attention to my health before, but I have learned a lot here. I quit smoking, I drink more water, and I take things more seriously.”
In 2018, Manuel came back to the clinic after developing a troublesome twitch on the right side of his face that led to radiating pain through his head, arm and shoulders. He had been suffering for more than two years, struggling with sleep and daily life, thinking there was a no cure that could help him. Fortunately, one of our thoughtful provider volunteers took a closer look at Manuel and was able to diagnose him with a Hemifacial spasm and refer him to a neurologist through Project Access Now. Three weeks later, Manuel underwent an eight-hour surgery that not only changed his life and eliminated his pain, but it didn’t cost him anything. Manuel still comes in periodically today for medication management and primary care. He says everyone at the clinic is always friendly, and he always feels at home.
“I love this place. It is a big help to the community. I know I am always welcome to come back if I need to”
